Converting post-crash deformation into energy equivalent speed (<i>EES</i>): Toward an objective measure of crash severity

چکیده

In this paper, an objective method for the conversion of post-crash vehicle deformation to crash energy is presented. While severity assessment standard test configurations relatively robust, bias in real-world reconstruction a well-known problem. Intelligent Methods for Car Deformation Modeling and Crash Speed Estimation

Car body deformation modeling plays a very important role in crash accident analyses, as well as in safe car body design. The determination of the energy absorbed by the deformation and the corresponding Energy Equivalent Speed can be of key importance, however their precise determination is a very difficult task. Although, using the results of crash tests, intelligent and soft methods offer an...

CRaSh-ing into HCI

This paper describes a novel classroom based project that looked at methods for sharing the contributions of students during activities in undergraduate classes. Initially intended for HCI students, the CRaSh product has wide applicability for creative use of class time and for inspiring students in their design work. The method employed was a prototype interface that allowed the sharing of dig...

Alternative Crash Severity Ranking Measures and the Implications on Crash Severity Ranking Procedures

Most states currently use ranking procedures to identify intersections with safety concerns. One objective of a state intersection ranking procedure is to provide a reliable start to the prioritization of safety improvements. For efficiency purposes, it is crucial to have a ranking system that identifies intersections with the most severe safety concerns. Otherwise, potentially hazardous inters...

Injuries in Rollovers by Crash Severity

Earlier studies by the authors have examined factors that contribute to rollover crash severity. These factors include: (1) belt use, (2) the number of quarter-turns aggregated according to number of vehicle inversions, and (3) the damage severity from planar impacts with fixed and non-fixed objects that occur before or during the rollover. Further research indicated that rollovers with severe ...

Median barrier crash severity: some new insights.

Median barrier is used to prevent cross-median crashes on divided highways. Although it is well documented that crash frequencies increase after installing median barrier, little is known about median barrier crash severity outcomes. The present study estimated a nested logit model of median barrier crash severity using 5 years of data from rural divided highways in North Carolina. Vehicle, dri...
